Notes from the Archive: Marcel Dzama is recognized for his detailed drawings using watercolors and inks and occasionally his secret ingredient - root beer base. He draws inspiration from Disneyesque cartoon characters of the 1940's and 50's along with the chaotic energy of Japanese animation. Dzama combines animals, monsters and nymphs in a provocative distortion of children's illustrations.
This drawing includes a superwoman character with a star on her hat, floating above a devilish animal face, yet surrounded by nymphs and one of Dzama's signature bear-like animals with a pitchfork. Precisely drawn in ink and colored in several shades of warm gray. Heraldic tendrils and ribbons tie it all together and give it the appearance of a coat of arms or other symbolic insignia.
