Notes from the Archive: In his book, Gerard Taylor: Early Work, the following quote accompanies the image of the Piccadilly Lamp, "Design has dealt for too long with form first - form should follow idea". He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1982 and joined the staff of Ettore Sottsass in Milan, shortly after the launch of the inaugural Memphis Collection. Taylor designed furniture, lighting and carpets for Memphis and made substantial contributions to their graphic oeuvre. Five years later, he returned to London to establish a studio with Daniel Weil. He also continued designing for Memphis and Anthology Quartet in Germany. More recently he has collaborated with numerous clients and manufacturers, including Orla Kiely, Selfridges, Bernhardt Design and Orangebox. The Piccadilly Lamp is the distillation of his design aesthetic with the form following his "idea" for a perfect lighting solution.
