Notes from the Archive: Nathalie Du Pasquier is best known as one of the founding members of Memphis and the designer of many of their textile designs. An artist, not originally trained in design, she brought a fresh, exuberant, energy to the group as seen in her designs for both laminates and textiles. George Sowden and Nathalie Du Pasquier collaborated on numerous drawings of interiors, towns and cities expanding the view of Memphis design. In this drawing, the pair of lamp posts have an ceremonial and totemic presence, yet the colors and shapes lead one to imagine them as a male and female couple. The male in a bright blue is standing slightly taller, and his female partner is in soft pink with more rounded forms. Both designs incorporate a main light source and several satellite bulbs. Consider the amazing streetscape, an alternating row of these would create.
