Notes from the Archive: Bennett Bean is an American sculptor and painter, best-known for his work in ceramics. He works in a range of media including metal and precious metals, stone, wool and silk weavings, and painting. The Cut Out Chair explores aluminum as a material that allows for the artist's interest in creating a sculptural form in a strong yet light material.  The pattern on the back of the chair adds geometric tension to the architectural nature of the chair form. The chair is easily movable and very comfortable.  The Whitney Museum acquired a sculpture from the artist in 1967 and now his work is included in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous other important institutions.
