Notes from the Archive: Bennett Bean is an American sculptor and painter, best-known for his work in ceramics. The vessel form has been Bean's focus through-out his career, as he views it as sculpture in the round, meant to be seen from all angles. Post firing, Bean embellishes each vessel with richly colored acrylic paint, transparent glazes and gilding. Each work is seductive, with visual imagery, engaging from all sides, and a deep richness emanating from the gilded interior.
The Whitney Museum acquired a sculpture from the artist in 1967 and now his work is included in numerous museums including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
