Notes from the Archive: After launching Acme Studio in 1985 with a successful limited edition collection of jewelry by Peter Shire, Adrian Olabuenaga contacted Marco Zanini and many other designers of the world-renowned Memphis collection to design jewelry utilizing a cloisonné enamel technique. Zanini worked at Sottsass Associati and was a founding Memphis member and designed an extensive collection of necklaces, earrings, brooches and bolo ties for Acme Studio. The design of the Soledad Brooch and the Esmeralda Earrings, are directly related to Sottsass Associati's first work of interior architecture (1984) in the US for Grace Designs Showroom in the World Trade Center in Dallas, Texas. The facade was fabricated of primary colored building blocks and these jewelry pieces denote Zanini's great contribution to that project (photo included.) The Memphis Designers for Acme collection debuted in 1986, at the opening of the Memphis/Milano exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City. The entire collection is in the permanent collection of the Groninger Collection in The Netherlands and is represented in other museum collections worldwide. The Soledad Brooch is directly from the Acme Studios vault and once these last few are sold, they will be gone forever, making them extremely sought after.
