Details: The Wiggle Side Chair, architect Frank O. Gehry's best-known design in cardboard, was designed in 1972. This example was acquired directly from Bloomingdales in the 1970's. The cardboard seat and back have a beautiful suedelike patina. The condition is good with some scuffs on the fiberboard edges.
Notes from the Archive: Frank O. Gehry has shared his initial inspiration with cardboard as a building material: "One day I saw a pile of corrugated cardboard outside of my office-the material which I prefer for building architecture models-and I began to play with it; to glue it together and to cut it into shapes with a hand saw and a pocket knife." He named the material Edge Board and in 1972 he introduced a series of cardboard furniture under the name "Easy Edges." In 1973, Bloomingdale's featured one of their model rooms designed with Barbara D'Arcy in collaboration with Gehry, in which everything-including the floors and walls-was made of some form of cardboard. The Wiggle Chairs were grouped around a dining table (see photo). The collection was an instant success and brought Gehry immediate fame as a furniture designer.
Today, Gehry's name is synonymous with great architecture, thanks to spectacular international projects such as the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, the Guggenheim Museum Bilboa in Spain, and Experience Music Project in Seattle and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
