Emma Cobb notes in her essay, "The creation of interiors that both invite and resist discovery, that in a single gesture can both initiate us into their mystery and establish their ultimate privacy, is one of Maruyama's singular contributions. It stands to reason that an artist with a strong feeling for the organic relationship between exterior and interior should be particularly drawn to botanical forms whose surfaces - like those of their natural counterparts - are integrally related to some powerful forces within."
