Notes from the Archive: Wendell Castle is rightfully known as the father of the Art Furniture Movement. Since the early 1960's, Wendell Castle has challenged traditional divisions between craft, furniture and fine art, combining technical virtuosity with an ever-changing vocabulary of form, color and content. In this screen, Castle echoes in two dimensions a series of furnishings in which he carved huge, organic pods as legs and table bases. Here, a room divider or screen serves as a colorful abstract painting of the pods, creating a wry "furniture-as-portrait-of-furniture" motif.
