Notes from the Archive: Timed to coincide with the opening of American Craft Museum's showing of Castle's mid-career retrospective, "The Furniture of Wendell Castle"; Peter Joseph Gallery's inaugural exhibition "Angel Chairs: New Work by Wendell Castle" opened in February 1991 to considerable fanfare. Castle's new work included stack laminated wood and patinated metal "Angel Chairs" and an assortment of extraordinary pedestals. The Miniature Bronze Angel Chair was produced as a special edition in honor of the dual exhibitions. Charming in its small stature, with its cantilevered seat and decorative cut out in the back, it reminds us of Castle's sculptural creativity and wit. Castle has always insisted that it is the form, not the material he is thinking of, and this tiny chair captures the tactile whimsy of his vision. An extremely collectible small work by America's father of the art furniture movement and renowned sculptor, designer and educator.
