Artist/ Designer: Ettore Sottsass
b. 1917 Innsbruck, Austria
Title: Memphis Milano Silk Scarf
Medium: Silk with fringed ends
Dimensions: 13" wide x 69"
Details: Pattern is from an architectural drawing designed by Ettore Sottsass for use in this textile design. Each scarf is unique, as it is hand cut from the larger pattern which repeats in the silk fabric. This scarf is from new production from Memphis Milano from the original 1984 design.
Notes from the Archive: Graphic pattern is at the very foundation of the Memphis ethos, and its revolutionary use in Memphis plastic laminate and textile designs. In 1982, the second Memphis collection shown at the Milan Fair, included cotton textiles featuring graphic patterns by Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanini, and Nathalie du Pasquier. Originally as a promotional idea, they had a few neckties, and bow ties, camp shirts and swimsuits cut from their fabrics. (Image from the original brochure shown below.) As the wearables gained popularity with the design cognoscenti, a more luxurious silk collection of ties and scarves was produced in 1984. (Please note we are offering this scarf in two color ways.)
