Notes from the Archive: Studio Job, founded in 2000 by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, is best known for combining a high level of craftsmanship with extreme ornamentation. Their work sits on the border between art and design, and their iconography moves from traditional or primitive, to symbolic and monumental. Their style has been referenced as "neo-gothic" due to the complex combination of symbolic ornamentation and the message it implies. In the Graphic Paper Chandelier, Smeets and Tynagel used their initial design for Moooi produced in a pristine white lacquered paper as their blank canvas and added an exacting graphic pattern to the paper of charming insects, as if they, too, were invited to dinner. Studio Job has exhibited worldwide and their work is included in numerous international museums. The Groninger Museum in the Netherlands opened The Studio Job Lounge within the prestigious museum, and exhibited a major retrospective of their work. A comprehensive retrospective, "Studio Job; MADHOUSE" will be opening in March 22-August 21 at the Museum of Art & Design in New York City.
