Notes from the Archive: Will Barnet is a beloved American printmaker and painter known for his stylized portraits of women, children and cats, often modeled on his own family and pets. This iconic image captures a mother reading to a child in front of a window, with a cat perched beside them. The intimacy of the scene is enhanced by Barnet's deft work in pencil. The drawing was a study for a U.S. Postage Stamp, planned for release in 1987, commemorating the Year of the Young Reader, although the stamp was never issued. Later this image was used to create a lithograph and also an etching and aquatint,  titled "Twilight". It is unusual to find a finished preliminary work in such pristine condition. His work is universally acclaimed and included in hundreds of museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, MoMA and SFMOMA.  At the age of 100, he was awarded the 2011 National Medal of Arts. This is an important one-of-a-kind work and extremely collectible.
