Notes from the Archive: The use of plastic laminate (especially patterned laminate) in furniture design was part of the initial shock of the early Memphis collections, but it also opened up an entirely new dialogue with various materials from marble to metal-flake fiberglass. These created an entire catalog of old and new materials freely used by the Memphis designers, making it possible for them to communicate in new ways. In 1984/85, a new wood veneer product was created reconstituted and dyed in an amazing range of colors.  Ettore Sottsass masterfully used  this new material in many successful pieces of furniture including the Ivory pedestal, the Freemont cabinet, and the Tartar sideboard. Each segment of the column pairs a different material with a different edge contour - straight, wavy, sawtoothed, providing a different silhouette from every vantage. It is particularly striking when used as a pedestal for a work of art or a beautiful floral arrangement.
