Notes from the Archive: George Sowden, an English industrial designer and a founding member of the Memphis group, was prominently featured in every Memphis collection. The D'Antibes Cabinet premiered with the original 1981 collection that rocked the Milan Furniture Fair and the international design world.  It is easy to imagine that the Memphis designers simply concocted radical designs without a thought as to how we would live with them. In truth, they were deeply committed to a vision of everyday life with new ideas of design. Sowden's designs are most noted for placing New Design into the context of domestic life. This is a formal cabinet, re-imagined in classic Memphis style!
