Notes from the Archive: Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking process traditionally created on a metal plate using a steel "needle" to create the lines of the drawing. The burr of the metal shavings are left in place, to create a softer, textured line produced on the paper by ink that adheres to the burr, as well as the indentations of the line. Drypoint editions are generally small, as the burr can wear down under the pressure from the press. In Bird in the Hand I, Kipniss deftly uses scale and atmospheric perspective in relationship to the open field and the high contrast of the houses and foliage. A modern landscape enhanced by his use of this century-old printmaking technique.
Kipniss' work is represented in the permanent collections of hundreds of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the British Museum in London and the Bibliothèque National in Paris.
