Cheese Board (Prototype)
by Michael Graves for Alessi

$425.00

Artist/Designer: Michael Graves
b. 1934 Indianapolis, IN - 2015 Princeton, NJ

Title: Cheese Board 1997
Medium: Thermoplastic resin cover, ceramic cheese board, metal tray with a matte finish
Dimensions: 8" h x 15" diameter
Manufacturer: Alessi
Details: This prototype was used as the original NY showroom sample for many years. In this early version, the tray is a painted matte finish; current production uses a metal tray with a mirror finish. This prototype has minor surface scratches where the raw edge of the underside of the ceramic board rubs on the tray, not really visible until the ceramic board is removed.  Otherwise in very good condition. Obviously, the fact that the ceramic marred the original matte finish shown here, is the reason for the change to the polished mirror finish. Currently still in production.
Notes from the Archive: Here Michael Graves' design features a charming cartoon-like mouse atop the outside of the domed plastic lid, staring at the display on a delectable looking ceramic "Swiss cheese". The adorable mouse character reminds of us of Topo Gigio, a lead character of an TV show shown on both Italian and Spanish TV in the '60's, but best known in the U.S. for his appearances on the Ed Sullivan show. Or perhaps this was Graves' nod to another famous mouse, as he designed numerous buildings for Disney beginning in the mid-80's.
