Notes from the Archive: The Swiss husband-and-wife team of Robert and Trix Haussmann began as strict modernists to establishing a reputation as masters of "tromp l'oeill" (or fool the eye) design. Stripes was produced as a dinnerware collection in both a black on white pattern and a white on white pattern. "It is easier to express a pure formal idea in smaller things," they note in the Swid Powell book by Annette Tapert, "because in general the small object is less complex. And we always get new ideas for architectural projects when we are thinking on a small scale."
