Peter Shire
b 1947, Los Angeles California
Peter Shire is known for his definition-defying work in ceramics, designs for the XXIII Olympics, major sculptures in California, along with numerous design works for the Memphis Group (as a founding member). Shire has described his work as his visualization of what could happen if you could throw geometric objects up in the air, allowing them to magically come together as a teapot, a vase, a chair, or a table. His work is included in numerous international museum collections and, in 2013, was honored by a retrospective exhibition shown in three locations organized by the Louisiana State University’s Museum of Art.
