Notes from the Archive: Shortly after completing his studies in architecture in Florence, Marco Zanini met Ettore Sottsass and began working in his studio.  He was one of the founding members of Memphis, designing works for the collection from 1981- 1986. He is best-known for his architectural building blocks approach to design, and his works for Memphis include ceramics, laminates, furniture, lighting and jewelry.
Early in 1985, Zanini traveled to New York to personally to present drawings and ceramic prototypes to Bloomingdale's executives for their upcoming seven-week fashion and furniture event in 1985, "Ecco L'Italia." He presented his drawing for his three-level fruit bowl, with numerous color and design options. (Drawing also available - view here). Ultimately his presentation was successful and Memphis ceramics were featured in a special display in the gift department and included production versions of his Broccoli Bowl, Carrot and Cucumber vases by Nathalie Du Pasquier, Celery and Tomato trays by Michele De Lucchi, and a series of plates; Rucola, Indivia and Lettuce by Ettore Sottsass. Broccoli Bowl was also included in the 1985 Memphis Collection and is currently in the collection of numerous international museum collections.
