Notes from the Archive: The concept of organic form has often been a point of inspiration for Paley's work through the years. Both his admiration for Art Nouveau and fascination with the layering of shapes and forms in the botanical realm continue to intrigue him. "Transient Reference", is an exploration of light and shadow with sharp edges against rounded natural forms playing off each other in a unified, multi-layered arrangement. Tendrils and ribbons seem effortless and ephemeral, yet are fabricated by hand in steel. When one thinks of a Paley sculpture the imagined image is of a twenty to eighty foot high work in steel or perhaps one of the series of thirteen monumental sculptures installed on Park Avenue esplanade in New York City in 2013, each weighing a ton or more. This sculpture was created specifically for personal and intimate contemplation, whether installed in a residence, an office or a museum. Not a maquette or model for another work, but an extraordinary human scale work of art incorporating Paley's mastery in steel and his visionary assemblage of forms.
