Notes from the Archive: The Seam Tea Set is part of Konstantin Grcic's Haute Couture series which focuses on a single detail in the process of porcelain production. As his design could not be shaped on potter's wheels, it must be cast by hand from "slip". The plaster moulds required for this work usually produce thin seams at their joints, generally seen as imperfections and later removed by hand. But here Grcic has elevated these seams into the predominant feature on his simple, and elegant tea service.
Originally trained as a cabinetmaker at The John Makepeace School in Dorset, England, Konstantin Grcic went on to study design at the Royal College of Art in London. Since setting up his own practice he has designed furniture, products and lighting for renowned clients including Vitra, Cappelini, Driade, Flos, Magis, Serafino Zani and Rosenthal. He has been honored with many awards including the Compasso d'Oro in both 2001 & 2011, and the Wallpaper Designer of Year Award in 2015. His work is included in the permanent collection of numerous international design museums, including MoMA, the Centre Georges Pompidou and is the subject of recent exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum. His style reflects a thoughtful, pared-down design and he is currently considered one of the most important designers of our time.
