Seventeen different brilliantly colored dyes are used in creating the inlays made from a variety of wood types depending on the grains desired for each inlaid "icon". These marquetry masterworks with their book matched inlays, depict scenes of farm life, including red barns, silos, corrals, fruit trees, sunflowers, shafts of wheat, tractors and farm tools, along with sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese and the occasional mouse and bluebird.
Notes from the Archive: Studio Job, founded in 2000 by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel, is best known for combining a high level of craftsmanship with extreme ornamentation. Their work sits on the border between art and design, and their iconography moves from traditional or primitive, to symbolic and monumental. The Bavaria Collection was inspired by 17th and 18th Century hand-painted furniture prized by museums. Studio Job playfully switched mediums and methods using marquetry, a traditional craft of the 'applied arts', to impersonate the 'fine art' of painting. Here they share an animated, happy, storybook rendition of paradise, where man's innocent, simple toil reaps a peaceful and prosperous harvest.
