Notes from the Archive: An important design in Alessandro Mendini's career and it's history is preserved as part of the Vitra Design Museum Collection. In 1974, Mendini set two identical chairs on fire in front of the offices of Casabella, an Italian design magazine that he was then the editor, for a cover photograph. Each chair carried the word Lassu´ (means "up there") on the front of the seat. One of them burned almost completely and the remains are currently in the archives of the Museum of Parma. The second has an overall charred finish but the design is intact, and it now resides at the Vitra Design Museum. Mendini's point with this exercise was to eliminate the boundary between art and design.
