Notes from the archive: This catalogue accompanied Alphonse Mattia's first exhibition at the Peter Joseph Gallery. The exhibit included vertical bookshelf units supported by an oversize compass, a gigantic clothes pin, and even one reinforced by multiple bottle shapes. Additional works included a game table and chairs, a series of valets, a bench, a major sideboard and a pair of torcheres (structurally held up by books, with burning books at the top creating the lighting metaphor). A favorite of the exhibition were a Pair of Easy Chairs, closely related to his work for the New American Furniture exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Both essays are very insightful, especially Art Comes Home. Reflections on the Work of Alphonse Mattia by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, professor and former chairman of the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago and author of numerous books including Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (New York, Harper & Row, 1990.)
