Notes from the Archive: The shell of the chair is injection molded with a relief design in a figure eight shape, often referred to as traces left by sea waves in the sand. Also described as resembling a butterfly, an infinity Zen tracing, or even a pretzel. As an additional note in 2006, Arad collaborated with Issye Miyake and textile expert Dai Fujiwara on the A-POC project (A Piece of Cloth). Working with an industrial weaving machine programmed by a computer that creates continuous tubes of fabric, the concept was a revolutionary way of making clothes as the customer could cut exactly the amount they needed, thus reducing waste. For the Ripple chair project, Miyake and Fujiwara designed a fabric cover for Arad's Ripple chair, which could then be removed from the chair to be worn by the owner as a vest/jacket.  The two holes in the back of the chair became the armholes of the garment (photos below for reference - not included with this chair). The Ripple chair was included in Ron Arad: No Discipline, the retrospective exhibition featured at MoMA in 2009, and travelled to additional stops including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Stedelijik Museum in Amsterdam. in addition to MoMA, Arad's work is in numerous international collections including the Vitra Design Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum in Osaka, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
