Notes from the Archive: Alberto Alessi had always been curious to collaborate with a large-scale mass-production industry concerned with precise technological research and functionality in conjunction with Alessi's openness and experimentation with design.  Stefano Marzano, the head designer for Philips met with Alberto and Alessandro Mendini in March 1992 at a secret location in Holland.  Here the perfect partnership was formed through meetings with the Philips designers and product managers.  In 1994, four kitchen appliances (a toaster, an electric kettle, a citrus juicer and this coffee maker) were launched at the then new Groninger Museum in the Netherlands (Mendini was the head designer of the Groninger Museum). The collection received many design awards, and was immediately sold out with customers signing up on a waiting list to purchase the products. Products from this series are included in MoMA's collection along with many other international museums.
