Notes from the Archive: The name of the chair refers to a small sweet or candy in a similar shape, with a brightly colored shell and a licorice center. After all, licorice is the most popular candy in Finland! Pastil was often referred to as the "Gyro" chair as its rocking motion swivels in 360 degrees. Aarnio designed this chair for both indoor and outdoor use and imagined it would float in swimming pools, and even be used as a sled to glide down a snow covered hill. (Not certain we would recommend putting the chair in your swimming pool or using it for snow sledding though). The chair won an American Industrial Award in 1968 and is included in many international museum collections.
