Notes from the Archive: John Dunnigan proudly proclaims himself a furniture maker, with a deep understanding of the history of furniture makers before him. His works often evoke memories of Art Deco and Biedermeier styles, yet are distinctly contemporary while still working in a traditional spirit.  His work often favors old world techniques over faster modern methods. This cabinet with its richly figured bubinga and detailed bronze and wood "gallery" on the top suggests an elegance observed in eighteenth century furniture.  A single cabinet door hinges to one side revealing an inner compartment with shelf, but from the front view appears to be two doors at first glance. In one of the essays  from his exhibition catalogue, "John Dunnigan: Furniture Maker" by Warren and Bebe Johnson, they quote the art critic, Helen Harrison discussing Dunnigan's work: "There are allusions to Deco, Egyptian tomb work, Japanese lacquer and asymmetry. Dunnigan entertains us with his references while engaging us with his composition. Then we think with a thrill: I can use this daily; I want to live with it!"
