Notes from the archive: In her forward, Barbara Radice describes Cleto Munari as an adventurous entrepreneur. The project began by chance when Munari commissioned Michelle De Lucchi to design a ring for his wife Valentina, and soon after made a similar request of Sottsass. Munari became more and more enthusiastic about assembling an international collection to the point of setting up a small company to employ goldsmiths to make these pieces all by hand. Fifteen architects and one artist (Peter Shire) were chosen, many of them real "starchitects", and the resulting collection is truly extraordinary. The book is divided by designer and each section includes numerous color and black and white photographs, as well as an image of the original design drawings. Designers include Mario Bellini, Michele De Lucchi, Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Richard Meier, Alessandro Mendini, Paolo Portoghesi, Peter Shire, Ettore Sottsass, Stanley Tigerman, Oscar Tusquets, Robert Venturi, Lella Vingnelli, Marco Zanini. This collection toured numerous US locations under the title Modern Jewelry: New Design.
